Rose Garcia, an undocumented teenager living in Texas, dreams one day of being a country music star despite the ridicule of everyone around her. She lives alone with her mom who works as a maid in roadside hotel. One day Elliot, the local record store kid, invites her to a honky tonk to see one of her heroes the almost-famous, Jimmy Redburn. When they return, Rose is shocked to find that her mother has been picked up by the immigration authorities and about to be deported back to the Philippines. She leaves Rose a note to find her aunt in Austin and to seek safety there. Rose heartbroken, but determined to find a way to stay in the country enlists Jimmy's help, who refuses at first, but later discovers Rose's talent and agrees to help her write a demo. The two embark on a journey of soul searching, song writing, and an unlikely friendship between a dreamer and a country music legend.
